When printing on dark garments, pretreatment is a process to prevent the absorption of white ink, as well as other colors, into & through the fibers of the garment. The pretreat fluid forms a barrier, so to speak, that gels the white ink, allowing it to stick to  the fibers of the dark garment. Once sprayed on the garment, pretreat is then dried with a heat press prior to printing. Pretreat needs to be distributed evenly across the garment so images print smoothly, providing the best quality and color pop! Correctly pretreating a garment aides in ink adhesion, greatly improving the life of the print when washed.
